Product Information
Aqua Medic Nitrate Reducer 5000
Rated for aquariums up to 800 gallons.
Nitrates are the end result of the biological filtration in your aquarium system and certainly the biggest reason you find yourself tangled in hoses and wrestling with buckets.
Aqua Medic offers some relief, with a complete line of Nitrate Reductors, including 2 models designed to cover aquaria from 75 to 800 gallons.
The all natural process works for both fresh and saltwater systems to reduce or eliminate nitrates. You will enjoy fewer water changes, less algae to scrub, fewer problem-algae blooms and better animal health. Just the reduced water change schedule alone will improve your system stability, lower the costs of maintenance and allow you more time to enjoy it!
The Nitrate Reductors utilize a sealed chamber through which water is pumped very slowly, creating a low oxygen environment. In these anoxic conditions, naturally occurring bacteria breakdown nitrate (NO3), to use the oxygen it contains, entirely removing it from the system.
The Deniballs filter media is a carbon food source for these bacteria and they should be replaced annually. For optimum control and a minimum of fine-tuning effort, we recommend using an Aqua Medic mV Computer to regulate the flow through-put based on the mV value within the reductor.
The Aqua Medic Nitrate Reducer 5000 is an anaerobic biological reactor for the removal of nitrates from marine and fresh water aquaria.
It has a large volume of 12 liters (2.5 gallons) and an internal circulation pump. The Nitrate Reducer works with a flow rate of 2.5 to 8.0 gallons per hour. This condition, in the absence of oxygen, promotes special bacteria to metabolize nitrate. Denimar tablets or Deniballs are used as an organic energy source. To monitor this process, it is possible to use a redox potential monitor (ORP monitor) in conjunction with the probe inserted in the supplied port. The Nitrate Reductor is a closed unit that can be integrated in filter systems or can be used as a stand alone filter. The water supply can be via a bypass from a circulation pump, canister filter or a small powerhead.

Nitrate Reductor Tips and Tricks
* It is strongly recommended that you use a mV Computer or Controller with a High Pressure mV Probe to manage the ORP inside the reactor. * Replace your Deniballs annually to maintain optimal food levels for the anaerobic bacteria within the reactor. * Check the water flow rates regularly for deviations. * Be patient when establishing your Nitrate Reductor as it can take months to fully establish a denitrifying bacteria colony. After plumbing it into your system, fill your reductor with system water, secure the lid and plug in the internal circulation pump but do not run water through it for 1 week while feeding Denimar Powder daily. After one week, begin flowing water through the reactor to maintain an ORP level between -50 and -250 mV. You can feed Denimar several times a week until slime can be seen collecting on the media at which time the Deniballs are sufficently dissolving and supplemental feeding can be stopped. Denitrification is fully established when the effluent water shows no or trace quantities of nitrate, depending on system levels. * If you smell rotten eggs (sulphur dioxide) it indicates that the flow is too slow through the reductor. Raise the water flow rate, or the mV setting if using a mV Controller/Computer. * Use an SP-3000 Dosing Pump, valved on the input side, to feed water through the Nitrate Reductor 400. The Nitrate Reductor 1000 includes the SP-3000 pump. * Use the included 3/4 inch tee fitting to bleed off the water input for the Nitrate Reductor 5000 from your main sytem pump or filter accessory pump.
